      <image:title>Blog - The Artist in Society</image:title>
<image:caption>As I transition into the professional world of music, I’ve been musing a lot on the role of the ‘artist’ in society. This word means different things to different people: traditional artistic roles include painters, sculptors, writers, and composers, but in today’s society we can almost certainly add photographers, graphic designers, comic strip creators and film directors to the list. What about the performing arts; are actors counted as artists? What about performing musicians and dancers, choreographers, and comedians? My feeling is that they are, but each of these types of art operate on different levels. Artists working with language and visual media can make much more direct statements than those involved in the abstract arts such as music, but I believe that all forms of art have the potential for far-reaching influence.</image:caption>

<image:title>Degree Showcase - BA (Hons) Music - Degree Showcase - Inspired by Robert Burns's poem My Heart's in the Highlands, this work for clarsach (Gaelic harp) and chamber orchestra draws on Scottish traditions to create a contemporary soundscape evocative of Burns's home country. The work is in four movements, each using a different combination of instruments.</image:title>

<image:title>Degree Showcase - BA (Hons) Music - Degree Showcase - Alongside my composition portfolio, I undertook a research project which involved the analysis of work by other contemporary composers. My dissertation presented a framework for the discussion of Scottish-influenced contemporary works based on the idea of an ‘intuitive-translational’ spectrum, by considering the extent to which composers translate aspects of tradition into a contemporary idiom.</image:title>

      <image:title>Ensemble - Piob Mhor (2020)</image:title>
<image:caption>For wind quintet (fl/ob/cl/bcl/bn). Duration: 3' 20'' This lively wind quintet takes inspiration from one of the most characteristic traditional instruments of Scotland - the Great Highland Bagpipes (known as Piob Mhor in Gaelic). Piobaireachd is a traditional form of theme and variations played on the pipes, and in my own interpretation of this unique art form I have employed a contemporary performance technique on the oboe to recreate the sound of the bagpipes. <image:caption>Originally from Lancashire, Emma is a composer and software engineer now based in Fife, Scotland. Her music has been described as “wonderfully lyrical and inventive” (Masquerade Music), and is influenced by diverse musical interests such as impressionism and jazz. Initially graduating with a BSc in Computer Science from Warwick, Emma has pursued a successful career in control systems engineering, working at particle accelerators in the UK and Australia, and is now involved in building software for the world’s largest radio telescope, the Square Kilometre Array Observatory. After moving to Scotland, she decided to return to her first passion in life – music, and was awarded a first class BA (Hons) degree in music by the Open College of the Arts in 2022. This ignited a real passion for composition, and she has published a number of solo and ensemble pieces with Masquerade Music, including a suite for saxophone (Changing Landscapes) which was selected by both ABRSM and Trinity College London for inclusion in their woodwind syllabuses. Emma was also commissioned by the University of St Andrews to write a new wind sextet, premiered in their wind, brass and percussion festival in November 2021. In addition to composing, Emma holds the dipABRSM in piano performance and is available as an accompanist for exams and recitals. When not writing music or software, she enjoys performing as a cellist with the Dundee Symphony Orchestra, playing chamber music, and hill walking around Scotland.</image:caption>
